I Would Describe Myself As Self descriptions truly are funny; it's an opportunity to let narcissism shine through, so I'll try and avoid that and just be me. I'm creative and smart, but I'm also compassionate and empathetic. I'm fiercely independent self-sufficient and open-minded, and I do not have much patience for narrow-mindedness, bigotry and pettiness. I've been called everything from extremely self-confident to arrogant because I am secure in who I am as a person, what I have to offer to society in general and an individual in particular, and my intellectual curiosity. I love cooking, and I can pretty much prepare anything I've eaten (and enjoyed). People tend to like me even if I don't always tend to like people (remember, I have little patience for certain things and the people exhibiting certain traits). Diversity is and always will be of paramount importance to me because I have experienced racism on its most base front, yet I have benefited tremendously from the generosity and kindness of people from other races. I have overcome much more than most people can imagine, and so I have a healthy sense of perspective which helps me keep myself balanced. Individuality is important to me; a person should be who they are and not necessarily sacrifice that. As the first person in my family to attend college, I truly value education. I have a law degree and I worked for a large law firm, but recently, I am getting more an more used to the notion that that kind of life is simply not for me. I am a kind soul -- an artist at heart, and the cutthroat world of large law firm practice just isn't for me. I can do what I want, but truth be told, I have not quite figured that out yet. From being the first in my family to attend college to fly on a plane to leave the state (other than the neighboring state 15 minutes to our west) to living on the beach in Malibu to teaching privileged kids in Tennessee, I have tried a number of things. I am not yet where I want to be in life, but that is because there is so much to life to explore, to experience to create. I can explicate a Frost poem, recite lines from Wordsworth or Langston Hughes or Shakespeare or William Carlos Williams; I can write in iambic pentameter and yes, I know what dactyls and troches are. I have southern sensibilities and an unyielding sense of equity. I have good days, and I have bad ones. I love purple, but I'm not afraid to wear pink. I walk where others might run and sometimes run where others walk. I am unlike anyone I know, and frankly, I'm thankful for that.
